1.9 Hectare Park Proposed For Central Liverpool

A substantial redevelopment plan, which has been dubbed Liverpool’s Central Park, could see a green public space the size of two football pitches created near the city centre. Liverpool World reports that the plans are part of the £5bn renovation scheme of the northern docks and waterfront area.

The developers Peel L&P made the proposals as part of the Liverpool Waters development. They claim that the site will incorporate existing heritage features, enable access to the water for recreational purposes, and provide a wildlife habitat. They also hope to create a space that can be used to socialise, and to learn about nature and climate change.

Chris Capes, Peel L&P’s development director for Liverpool Waters, told the publication: “Green space has never been so important. Not only for our physical and mental health and wellbeing but also as a way of absorbing air pollution.”

He added: “Being able to create a new large public park at the heart of the city in an urban environment is really exciting. It is great to be able to share our proposals and have a conversation about what a new park could mean to the local community. We are really keen to have a conversation to find out what people like to see in parks and how they use them.”

Despite the ambitious new plans, there has been criticism in some quarters about the length of time the Liverpool Waters development is taking. The plans were first drawn up nearly a decade ago, and progress has been slow, and in some cases, stalled or been shelved altogether, the Liverpool Echo reports.

However, the developers are keen to point out that they have already built 660 new homes on the site, and the redevelopment of Everton Stadium is ongoing. They are also building a new Isle of Man Ferry terminal, and have plans for further cultural and commercial buildings in the area.
