A contractor has been appointed to carry out the infrastructure works for Central Docks, a new waterfront development close to Liverpool city centre. GRAHAM will take on the major works due to commence this autumn, according to reports in local press.
Central Docks is the largest brownfield site in the city, and is part of the up and coming Liverpool Waters District that has seen significant redevelopment of the former disused docklands.
Over the past two decades, the £5.5bn development by Peel Waters of the derelict area has seen new homes, office space, shops and amenities brought to Liverpool. The area now forms part of the Mersey Waters Enterprise Zone to boost its attractiveness to businesses and investors.
The Central Docks development will include the 2.1 hectare Central Park, which will become one of the city’s largest green spaces, and will contain sports, play and recreational facilities, as well as hundreds of new trees.
Councillor Liam Robinson, Leader of Liverpool City Council, said: “This appointment is a major milestone as it sets in motion a multi-million investment drive in one of the most important brownfield developments sites in England.”
“The Central Docks site at Liverpool Waters has massive potential to deliver a housing scheme of significance and show the country how transformational brownfield regeneration can and should be done. It will also act as a catalyst for our wider plans for north Liverpool, which will greatly help stimulate the housing sector in our city region.”
GRAHAM will also be responsible for delivering around 2,350 new homes, many of which will be built around the park. They will include a mixture of affordable, built-to-rent and homes for older people, as well as build-to-sell homes.
The ambitious plans will strengthen Liverpool’s growing reputation as the most vibrant and forward thinking city in the north west.
