“Healthy” Office Building Opens In Liverpool

Liverpool’s mayor Joanne Anderson and city region metro mayor Steve Rotherham were both in attendance for the opening of what has been described as one of the healthiest office buildings in the world, The Spine, a development in the Knowledge Quarter of Liverpool.

Liverpool Business News reported that the 14-storey property contains 200,000 sq ft of office space, with one of the main tenants in the building set to be the Royal College of Physicians.

The organisation has signed a lease to occupy 70,000 sq ft of space in the development, which will be used for its new northern headquarters.

According to the publication, the organisation has spent £13 million on fitting out the office space it has rented to provide education facilities, conference and meeting space and room for exams to take place.

Its offices will take up seven of the 14 floors within the building, with another tenant named as the Clatterbridge Hospital Trust, which will take one floor. Agent CBRE told the news provider that there is “strong interest” in the remaining available space.

The reason The Spine is described as being one of the healthiest offices in the world is that it has been designed using biophilic design principles with the mental and physical health of those who use it in mind.

Among the features in this block are planters containing high oxygen-producing plants, electric car charging ports in the car park, a large cycle park and floor-to-ceiling glazing throughout to let in plenty of natural light.

This is not the only UK-based development that is focusing on biophilic design principles. Architects’ Journal recently reported that a new advanced radiation therapy centre at Edinburgh’s Western General Hospital is also using biophilic design to create a space that supports patients and their families.
