Lack Of Sleep Costing UK Billions

When searching Liverpool for office space, knowing that you are in an area with good and quick transport links is important. This simple fact will de-stress mornings for your employees and mean they can turn that long, complicated commute time into something more valuable.

However, making sure they get a good breakfast or even do some morning exercise may pale in comparison to extra time spent asleep – and not just for themselves, but for your business too.

A new study, reported by Small Business, has found that sleep deprivation in the UK alone is costing the economy £40.2 billion a year in lost productivity. The trend is also moving towards less and less sleep for employees, meaning this figure is estimated to rise to £47 billion by 2030.

Jason Goldberg, director of SpaSeekers who carried out the research, said: ‘Prioritising sleep is hugely beneficial to everyone – from politicians and CEOs, to office workers and retail staff.’

Lack of sleep certainly has mental health impacts which can affect an employees working life, affecting reaction times, mood, concentration and memory. No matter what your job, these elements will all be important in a productive workplace.

However, lack of sleep will also affect health too. Weakened immune systems are related to lack of sleep and will mean employees require more sick days. It will also leave them more vulnerable to common colds and illnesses, which might not keep them at home on their sick bed, but may mean they’re not at their best for important meetings and deadlines.
