Liverpool Mass Testing Drives Hope For 2021 Events

The UK’s first mass testing operation for coronavirus has been carried out in Liverpool, starting on November 6th, with the numbers of those coming forward for tests standing at 90,000 as of November 12th.

The hope is that this rollout of testing procedures will help to ensure that major events such as the Grand National will take place next year, Business Live reports, with local politicians and hospitality leaders keen for the city to be involved with similar projects once the second lockdown is over that could see testing trials carried out for major events in 2021.

Speaking at the monthly Visitor Economy Panel held by the Liverpool BID Company, Culture Liverpool’s Clair McColgan said: “I think the interesting thing is around mass testing and how the next stage [will be about getting] people in and out of events – it’s hugely complicated, [for example,] where do you keep people while they wait for their positive or negative tests?

“So I think testing actually may be one of the ways where we and the government nationally start to look at this. That’s why it’s really exciting for Liverpool doing mass testing at this moment in time.”

Government scientific adviser professor Susan Michie has just come out and said that the next two weeks will be critical if the lockdown in England is to be lifted on December 2nd, as planned.

She observed that the news of a possible vaccine will make no difference to the second wave of coronavirus, but it could result in complacency, so the general public must resist breaking the rules to help ensure that the festive period can go ahead with a relative sense of normality.
