Liverpool’s Anfield District Set For New Redevelopment Phase

The area around Liverpool FC’s famous Anfield stadium is set for the latest phase in its redevelopment. Invest Liverpool reports that the City Council is due to discuss a report recommending that the main road and connecting streets around the stadium are upgraded, and plans for the future use of Anfield Square will also be set out.

Potential improvements to Anfield Square, which sits directly next to the Liverpool FC stadium, include new office space and community services that will benefit residents and maximise employment opportunities in the area.

The plans are part of a longer term £300 million redevelopment plan for the Anfield area, which began a decade ago. To date, low quality terraced housing in the area has been cleared and replaced with more than 600 new homes, and a further 500 homes have been refurbished.

The new plans will include further residential development at various sites across the area, as well as improvements to the highway and public realm. This will see the creation of extra parking bays, bus stops and taxi ranks. There will also be improvements to pavements and landscaping to make the area more attractive and accessible to pedestrians.

Councillor Dan Barrington, Cabinet Member for Transport and Connectivity, said: “The redevelopment of the Anfield community has been more than a decade in the making and we’re now entering a key phase to improving the heart of it.”

“Creating a healthier, greener, safer and more visually appealing high street will have a major impact on the day-to-day quality of life of our residents. This will set the foundation for further development to come to the housing and retail offer in the area.”

Elsewhere in the wider Liverpool city region, plans for a major regeneration of a former gasworks in Birkenhead are set to go ahead after a £51 million funding boost.

In a press release, Homes England explained that the Hind Street Urban Garden Village will involve the creation of a new community with commercial space, improved transport links, a public park, leisure facilities and more than 1,500 new homes.

Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, said:

“This is really exciting news which marks a significant milestone in our mission to regenerate Birkenhead and the wider Wirral. Through our Strategic Place Partnership with Homes England, we’re accelerating transformational projects like Hind Street, turning derelict land into vibrant, sustainable communities that our region deserves.”

“With over 1,500 new homes being built, alongside improved transport links and green spaces, this project will serve as a blueprint for the type of regeneration we want to see across the Liverpool City Region—regeneration that not only delivers homes but creates jobs, boosts local businesses, and builds stronger communities.”

These developments are just the latest in a long line of regeneration projects in Liverpool, which are transforming the city and facilitating its transformation into an economic and cultural leader of the north west.
