New Development At Former Wapping Station

Regeneration is planned for the former Wapping Goods Terminal in central Liverpool, Place NorthWest reports. Plans have been submitted to the City Council to build a residential apartment block and commercial units on the site by developer Carpenter Investments. The scheme would create a total of 257 new apartments.

The site sits in the Baltic Triangle, which has evolved into a hub for creativity, digital startups, and hospitality in recent years. Situated close to the Albert Dock, it is rich in architectural and industrial heritage, yet much of the land and buildings have stood empty for decades.

The Wapping Station was closed in 1965, but at one time, it was the thriving heart of Liverpool’s commercial district. According to Gaugemaster, it was the world’s first station dedicated specifically for the handling of goods, rather than passengers. It was built in 1830 as part of the Liverpool to Manchester Railway, to serve the Wapping dock.

The new development is designed by L7 Architects, and will be known as No1 Kings Dock Street. It is designed in according to the ‘old meets new’ ethos of the Baltic Triangle project, which is home to a diverse crowd of creatives and entrepreneurs, and has been described as the equivalent to New York’s hip Meat-Packing District.

A statement by The Planning Studio states: “Clearly, in bringing forward development proposals for the application site, it is important to consider how the development of the application site fits into the “bigger picture” for the comprehensive development, including the A J Beers site.”

The plans include 175-two bed apartments, seven three-bed apartments, and 75 one-bedroom apartments. There is also a proposed 13,000 sq ft of commercial space across five units planned for the area.
