One-Hectare Anfield Square Development Plot Up For Sale

A vacant brownfield site directly next to Liverpool FC’s Anfield Stadium is to be put up for sale. The one hectare site formerly contained 150 terraced houses, which have all now been demolished. The Liverpool Express reports that the City Council have appointed a specialist team to market and sell the land to full advantage.

The future development is seen as a part of the wider Anfield Regeneration Programme, which is an ongoing £260m scheme to improve the area. It has already seen the construction of 600 new homes, a school, retail units, and open green spaces.

Management Consultants Jones Lang Lasalle (JLL) have been hired by Liverpool City Council to find the most suitable buyers for the brownfield land, known as Anfield Square, which has been vacant since 2016.

Councillor Sarah Doyle, Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet member for Development and Economy, said: “This square presents a unique opportunity to create something special for the Anfield community – and most importantly a development that is shaped by those that live there.”

She added: “Liverpool FC’s stadium is world-renowned and attracts visitors from all over the planet, and the club is continuing to invest in it, so there will be an extremely high benchmark for the quality of what happens to Anfield Square.”

“The benchmark for community inclusion will also be very high to ensure this development provides a long-lasting positive economic, social and environmental impact for our residents in the area.”

“I’m delighted we’ve appointed such a talented team of experts with an impressive track record in community engagement and high quality developments. I look forward to seeing their work progress and hearing the views of the Anfield and Everton communities as this exciting journey begins to take shape.”

The Anfield Square development has the potential to enrich the local community on a social, economic, and environmental level, and the marketing consultants have promised to focus on social inclusion.

Henry Burton, Development Director at JLL, said: “This is a unique opportunity to help shape the future development for Anfield Square in a way that provides social, environmental and economic value for Liverpool.

“The prominent site, which is adjacent to the football ground of one of the world’s most famous football clubs, will appeal to a wide-range of developers that are committed to delivering transformative regeneration projects. We look forward to working with Liverpool City Council to identify the right development partner for this exciting scheme.”

Anfield Football Ground began life as home to rivals Everton. It was formerly a cricket ground, until the first game of football was played in 1884, when Everton defeated Earlestown 5-0.

When the owners of Anfield attempted to increase the rent, Everton moved out to Goodison Park, and Liverpool Football Club was created to fill the vacancy. The newly minted team made an auspicious start to their career with a 7-1 win over Rotherham Town. The team continued to prosper, going on to win the FA Cup in 1894.
