Plans Submitted For Welsh Streets Regeneration

A regeneration project for the famous Welsh Streets of Toxteth is set to move into its final phase, after developers Placefirst submitted final planning applications. The Liverpool Echo reports that the plans include 13 new terraced homes, and a community hub which will encourage the residents to engage with their local neighbourhood.

Overall, the scheme will deliver 283 homes, some of which will be refurbished terraced houses, and some which will be a mixture of three-bed family homes and one and two bed apartments. The plans will be put before Liverpool City Council’s planning committee, with a view to starting work before the end of the year.

James Litherland of Placefirst said: “Our plans at Welsh Streets respond to the unprecedented demand we are seeing for quality energy efficient homes that are built specifically for renters. We have consulted with residents and the Council to take their comments on board and will continue to work with them throughout the application process.”

He added: “The Welsh Streets is a flagship project for Placefirst, and shows our commitment to placemaking and urban regeneration, designing our homes with our residents at front of mind. We want to create a legacy at Welsh Streets and look forward to seeing phase six progress as the neighbourhood reaches completion.”

The Welsh Streets were originally built in the late 19th century by Welsh migrants, who named the streets after Welsh towns and valleys. The Beatles drummer Ringo Starr was born in Madryn Steet. Other streets include Wynnstay, Voelas, Thiwlas, and Powis Street. The are about 15 minute’s walk from Liverpool city centre.

The streets were almost demolished after funding for a regeneration project was withdrawn in 2010, but campaign groups such as Merseyside Civic Society and Save Britain’s Heritage fought to save them. In 2015, the demolition plans were quashed, partly because a public enquiry found that the Beatles connection meant they had cultural and historical value.
