Regeneration Plans For Liverpool’s ‘edgy’ Fabric District

Liverpool’s Fabric District was once at the forefront of the city’s textile industry, but as this declined during the first half of the 20th century, much of the hustle and bustle died down. The area was badly hit by bomb damage during World War II, and until recently it has been a rather neglected part of the inner city.

All that is set to change, as there are ambitious new plans for the district, which is well-placed on the fringes of the thriving Knowledge Quarter, near London Road and Islington. Despite a lack of organised investment, the area is described as ‘edgy’ and characterful, and the new developers promise to retain this ambience.

Business Live reports that The Fabric District Community Interest Company (CIC) have released a blueprint for the regeneration of the area, with suggestions for future projects as well as reference to past and ongoing projects.

The report says: “The Fabric District CIC wishes to lead and explore with local and central government a new bespoke regeneration model for the Fabric District, allowing this local community-led initiative to progress at pace and secure investment to deliver the long-term sustainable regeneration of the area.”

The CIC have consulted the local community when drawing up the report, and plan to work with the City Council and local business owners in the future, to ensure that new developments are relevant and beneficial to the area.

CIC chair, Michael Birkett, said: “Regeneration of the Fabric District is long overdue but we’re confident that much-needed focus and investment is now on its way, both from the public and private sectors. We’re working hard with the team at Liverpool City Council to see this through.”

Meanwhile, Molyneux Developments have submitted plans for a 103-bed student development in the Fabric District.
