Social Enterprise Asks For Unwanted Computers For Kids

Liverpool social enterprise Bulky Bob’s has issued a plea to Mersey businesses to donate their unwanted computer so they can be used by children across the Merseyside region.

Liverpool Business News reports that Bulky Bob’s recently offered high-spec computers to schoolchildren in the region who have had difficulties getting online to access homeschooling lessons as part of the social enterprise’s Computers for Kids charity drive.

The charity is working with businesses to support children by providing refurbished desktop computers. The initiative proved to be so successful that all of the computers sold out in a single day, creating over £58,000 of social value and giving a vital lifeline to Merseyside children during the pandemic. Bulky Bob’s now wants to offer more computers to those who need them.

To meet the demand, Bulky Bob’s has launched an urgent appeal to businesses who have a surplus of computers to use the service to get the units refurbished and to those who need them the most.

The charity wipes the computers of all data and fully refurbishes them at its workshop before being made available to purchase as a bargain price of £100 each. The package includes PCs with MS Windows operating system, monitor, keyboard, mouse and the base unit.

Chief executive Shaun Doran said: “We have a waiting list of organisations who support children who need computers, but we have totally sold out of stock.

“We are sending out a plea to businesses who have 10 or more computers that they no longer use to contact us so we can ensure these make their way to those most in need in society, particularly children without IT access during the current lockdown.”

It will allow schools, housing associations, and charities and other organisations that support the region’s children to provide IT access during the school closures.

Thousands of families in Merseyside are living in Furniture Poverty, sharing beds or even sleeping on the floor, and Bulky Bob’s aims to collect, refurbish and supply essential furniture items.
