It has been a good year for big charities over the past year, with the top 25 charities in the UK having more money than the rest of registered charities in the UK combined.
The largest charities’ total assets rose by just under eight per cent this year, similar to the sector as a whole. Excluding Garfield Weston the top twenty five charities saw their total asset value rise by 16 per cent in the past year, far surpassing the growth in values of other charities.
All of these charities are in the South East, and eight of them are in London alone. This shows up the disparity that exists not only between larger and smaller charities, but also the North and South.
The extreme wealth of the wealthiest charities does need to be considered as the strain on smaller charities grows. Many charities have found the past couple of years tough as the demand on the services that they offer grows. This has most notably been seen in housing charities and children’s charities, and health and disability charities have also experienced the strain.
