Liverpool ‘Ideal Location For Pandemic Institute’

Liverpool has been hailed as the perfect city to lead the research into global pandemics, thanks to its role in medical science so far.

Chair of Veterinary Epidemiology at the University of Liverpool Professor Matthew Baylis complimented Liverpool after it was announced that a world-leading Pandemic Institute will be built in the north-western city.

Professor Baylis, who is director of the Pandemic Institute, stated: “Liverpool is perfectly placed to be the home for the Pandemic Institute – building on the foundations laid so far in the city, and its significant contributions in this field, Liverpool is a global city with expertise in many fields relevant to pandemics.”

Innova Medical Group will provide £10 million for the centre, which aims to improve preparedness for future pandemics through ground-breaking scientific research.

As well as experts at the University of Liverpool, those working at Liverpool John Moores University, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, Liverpool Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Liverpool City Council, Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and Knowledge Quarter Liverpool will be involved in the important project.

Liverpool was chosen as the ideal city for the centre as it is considered best place to deliver end-to-end response to overcome the challenges of the current pandemic, as well as provide relevant and informative research to prevent future ones.

It is also a national leader in genomic sequencing; is home to one of only five High Consequences Infectious Disease Units in the UK; has been at the forefront of global pandemic research for several years; and was the first city in the world to introduce smart asymptomatic Covid-19 testing.

The Pandemic Institute will be based at The Spine, at Paddington Village, which has been described as one of the healthiest buildings in the world.

According to Liverpool Business News, it contains high oxygen-producing plants; a large cycle park; electric car charging points and floor-to-ceiling glazed windows throughout the building.
